Cape Barren Goose
A lovely distinctive goose, light
grey in colour with a square black tail.
A short black bill is almost fully covered in a greenish yellow cere.
Unique to Australia and among the least numerous waterfowl in the world.
Food
Feed on grasses, sedges, clovers,
herbs and seeds.
The bird has a nasal salt gland
to excrete excess dietary salt.
Breeding
The birds breed from May to August,
usually laying 4-5 eggs (from 1 to 7)
in a shallow cup-shaped nest of grass and twigs lined with down. They
mate for life and the female will
incubate the eggs for about 35 days.
Habitat
Pastures and light scrub covered
islands off the southern coast of Australia.
Seasonally moves to pasture areas on mainland.
