The Red Kangaroo resting in
the afternoon sun.
This is the world's largest marsupial,
with the fully grown males standing
two metres tall. The female is often called the "Blue Flyer" because of
her
blue-grey fur. Largely a nocturnal creature, spending the days often
in
groups under shady trees.
Food
Grasses and green herbage.
Breeding
A single young is born at anytime
of the year. When born the young is very
tiny and must crawl into the mothers pouch, where the joey then
remains for
8 months, and continues to suckle until 12 months of age.
Weaning occurs at 18 months of age.
Habitat
Mulga and mallee scrub grasslands
and deserts of mainland Australia.
The Kangaroo is absent from the wetter areas of eastern, northern and
south-western Australia.
