A Sleeping Koala
Sometimes erroneously called "koala
bear", it is not a bear at all,but
a member of the marsupial family.
Koalas spend a lot of time during
the day sleeping, are
most active just after sunset.
The claws are strong and are used to clasp
onto the tree branches.
Habitat
Eucalypt forests of eastern and
south-eastern Australia.
Food
Strictly folivorous they exist
almost exclusively on eucalypt leaves.
Koalas seldom drink water.
Breeding
Generally the Koala has one baby,
but twins have been reported.
The juvenile will remain in the
mother's pouch for 5 - 6 months,
then rides around on her back.
Weaning is completed by one year of
age.
